CHEATING BOOKMAKERS.
THUEE MEN SENT TO GAOL. OXE A TELEGRAPH EMPLOYEE. (By Telegraph.—Presis Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. In the Supreme Court to-day Ralph Antonovitch was sentenced to two years', John Ryan to two years' and Wilfred Henry Brown to twelve months' imprisonment for conspiring to defraud two bookmakers by means of "faked" telegrams. k Mr. Justice McGregor said all three accused were convicted in the first place for conspiring together to defraud two bookmakers by means of delayed telegrams, which reduced their betting to a certainty. The way in which they did this was very cunning and could only be carried out with the collusion of some member, or members, of the telegraph staff. Brown, as a telegraph officer, had undoubtedly been assisting these men in their attempts to cheat bookmakers. That was a very serious It cast discredit 011 the whole service and possibly caused suspicion to be thrown on perfectly innocent people.
