Chicago Gang Chief Sentenced , s To Eleven Years.

Al Capone, the gangster leader, was <at. Chicago yesterday sentenced to imprisonment for. 11 years and fined 50,000, dollars (£10,0.00) for evasion of the income tax laws., In addition, he must.pay the costs of the prosecution. ■. .'-..'. . '- : .; ■■■''■
' Counsel for the defence announced that an-appeal would be .lodged. Meanwhile Capone will be sent."to prison. ' Apart from ; his sentence' and , fine Capone v must pay 100,000 - dollars (£20,000) and i-37,328 dollars (£27,470)' owing for back income taxes.. - '
It,was a.smashing blow, to the gang chief, who tried- to take it with a smile, which proved a wry one.
Capone will spend the week r end in prison, and then will petition the Circuit Court of Appeals for release on bajil, pending his appeal. ■
"Well, you can say I intend.to get through with it," said Capone. later, but his temper was not of the best. He attempted to kick a little old man, an Internal Revenue Department process server, who handed him a writ attaching his property. Capone also tried to punch a photographer. ' : '.'„'_■
The' gangster's sentence was the most important news, in Chicago. Theman in the street .thought all along that he would, be "too big for that, he had too much money and too much influence."
