OBITUARY.
MR. DAVID L. SMART.
The death occurred at the Auckland Hospital on October 22 of Mr. David Lawson Smart, of Pukekohe, at the age of 62 years. Mr. Srt'.art was born at Mauku. From 1900 to 1908 he was headmaster of the Tuakau School and then went to Hawke's Bay, where he remained for 22 years. In May, 1930, he came to Pukekohe and joined the staff of the Technical High School, as assistant woodAvork instructor and teacher of general subjects. During his stay in Napier, Mr. Smart took an active interest in church and Sunday school work. He was also superintendent of St. John Ambulance Brigade. When he came to Pukekohe his interest in the Presbyterian Church was' maintained, and he also associated himself with the bowling club, of which he was an executive officer. He-is a brother of Mr. Alan Smart, of Taranaki, one of the Dominion's most prominent bowlers. Mr. Smart is survived/by Mrs. Smart, three sons and three daughters and several grandchildren.
MRS. LAURA JANE BLAKEY.
One of the oldest residents of Auckland, Mrs. Laura Jane Blakcy, of • Ponsonby Terrace, died yesterday, aged 87 years. She was the widow of Mr. J. G. Blakey, who died ten months ago, soon after the 87th.' anniversary of their wed-, ding. Mrs. Blakey was the daughter of Mr. J. -Gimbel, and her grandmother, Mrs. Rampolin, had a grocery shop in Wyndham. Street. Mrs. Blakey. was born in a house on. the southern side of Wyndham Street, and was christened in old St. Paul's Church .in 1844. She was married to Mr. Blakey on November 2, 1863. Her husband, born in Sunderland, arrived in Auckland by the ship Spray of the Ocean in 1859.- • His father was an early Mayor of Onehunga. : During the Waikato War, Mr.' J. G. Blakey served in the Militia and was one of the last civilians on guard duty at Albert Barracks when they were handed over to the Imperial troops. The grandmother of Mrs. Blakey, formerly Mrs. William Otto, and by her second marriage Mrs. Rampolin, was in Belgium dimng the war with Napoleon, her husband being connected with the commissariat department of the army of the Duke of Wellington. Immediately alter Waterloo she got possession of the quilt of Napoleon's bed, and it is now in the possession of the Blakey family. Mrs. Blakey is survived by the following children: Messrs. G. C. Blakey Dominion Road: C. J. Blakey, Mount Eden; F. L. Blakey, Avondalo; T. Blakey, Auckland; Alan Blakey, Auckland; and Mesdames A. Burgess, Mount Eden, and John Duthie, Wellington.
