A CUT FOR JUSTICE,

Reductions, have been made in the payment of witnesses and interpreters for the Crown in criminal cases, and in fees payable to coroners, deputycoroners, and justices of the peace, other than stipendiary magistrates, to common jurors and to witnesses at inquests. A 10 per cent reduction appears to have been followed generally, but in some cases, such as travelling allowances to coroners and medical witnesses, the old rates have been cut 50 per cent. With slight alterations the scale of payments had stood intact _ since March, 1890.- . ■ • ,

Following are the new rates, with the old in parentheses :t-' Supreme Court Trials. —Experts giving evidence, a day, £1 (£1 1/); nonexperts, 9/ (10/); nightly expenses, 3/6 (4/):.\ '~ ;.'-: ,\ ■ V ■ Interpreters' Fees. —For any time not exceeding one hour, 9/0 (10/6); every additional hour or fraction, 4/>'. (5/); not exceeding a day, £1 18/ (£2 2/); nightly expenses, 18/ (£1 1/).'

Inquests.—To coroner, deputy-coroner or justice of the peace, other than stipendiary magistrate holding an inquest, except id exceptional circumstances,. £1 (£1 1/); medical witnesses, £1 (£ll/); for post-mortem examination, £3 3/ (£3 3/); locomotion expenses, a mile, V ( 2 /)j non-expert witnesses, a day, 9/ (10/); nightly expenses, 3/6; (4/);

Common Jurors' Payment.—For period exceeding three hours of any one day, 10/6 (12/); not exceeding three hours; 5/ (6/). . .
