TRIANGULAR FIGHT.

New Zealander Refuses to Stand

Down.

COLNE VALLEY CONTEST.

(Received 1 p.m.)

LONDON, October 23,

The New Zealander, LieutenantColonel Lascelles, has declined to withdraw his candidature at Colne Valley in order to prevent s triangular contest. There have been negotiations lasting a week to reduce the original quadrangular fight to a straight contest between the National and Labour candidates. Colonel Lascelles and Mr. Mallalieu (National Liberal) refused to stand down, upon which Mr. Franklin (National Labour) cancelled his candidature.

The Conservatives contend that Mr. Franklin's withdrawal was most suitable as he was an' eleventh-hour candidate. The Liberals similarly regard Colonel Lascelles as an interloper and point out that the local Conservative chairman resigned because he did not agree to the Conservatives fighting the seat.

The present holder, Mr. Phiiip_ Snow* den, in a letter to Ms old constituents, urges them to vote Liberal in view of the disloyalty of the local Conservative Association to the National Government.
