DEBATE ON WAGE' "CUTS."

"That the Recent Wage Cuts in New Zealand Were Justified" was the subject of debate between the W.E.A. and the Leys Institute Debating Union on Thursday evening. The Leys Institute team, Messrs. J. Allum, J. C. Black ajid A. Clarke, supported the affirmative, stating that the fall in the national income necessitated a reduction in working costs, which included wages. The recent "cut" had been followed by lower costs of living. The W.E.A. team, Mr. B. Martin, Miss U. Moore and Mr. J. S. Stewart, contended that interest rates, not wages, were the burden of industry. The reductions had not been passed on to any real extent, and unemployment was increasing. The judge, Mr. E. H. Northcroft, gave his decision in favour of the W.E.A. team by 144 points to 126.
