Mr. and Mrs. 11. 11. Hogg, who have been visiting Auckland and staying in Pamell for the last two months, have returned to Opotiki.
Mrs. J. Tanner, of Wellington, is visiting Auckland prior to leaving on a short visit to Sydney and Melbourne.
Miss Gladys Brown, of Eltham, is returning for a few weeks to stay with her mother, Mrs. Moschini, of Herne Bay. * * * *
Special mention was made yesterday of the institutes at Puketniro, Glen Aftoii and especially Hobsonville, with only 2(3 members, which had sent in £3. Pukekolie sent in £7" 6/o,._and New Lynn .£4 4/.
At the annual meeting of the -Justices of the Peace" Association oh Thursday evening, for the first time in New Zealand, two women were elected on the Justices' Council. They are two prominent members of the National Council of Women, Mrs. Mary Dreaver and Miss Alice Batten. '
A pleasing little ceremony broke the business hours of the Women's Institutes yesterday, when the energetic secretary, Miss' Hopper, was highly complimented by the president, Mrs. S. Irwin, and presented with a cheque as a mark of the appreciation of her work for the federation. The whole room s rose and cheered, and then sang lustily "For She's a Jolly Good Fellow."
A compliment was paid to Miss Lewis, of Titirangi, yesterday at the conference of the Women's Institutes for the amount of work 6he had done as organiser, and thanks were also given for a fine silver vase, emblazoned with the institute's badge, and decorated handsomely, the gift of Messrs. Robert Young and. Co., of Auckland, to be. competed for each year for the best display of thrift work done by the members of an institute.
Humour is always very evident in any large gathering of Avomen conducting their own concerns, and laughter ran unrestrained yesterday over the annual conference of the Women's Institute of the Auckland province, when one delegate spoke of the incidents ■ to be met with when travelling in the country. At one place she read a notice which said, "Clean bed a shilling, others less. If you want to throw the furniture about go elsewhere." The burst of laughter which followed showed that the audience was quite a'wake to the humour of a hard life.
