EXEMPT FROM RATES.
ONE-EIGHTH OF OTAHUHTJ. CASE OF .KINDERGARTEN. The amount of rateable land in the borough receiving exemption from rates is giving the Otahuhu Borough Council grave concern.. It was pointed out at last evening's meeting that one-eighth of the total rating is : now exempted. The latest addition is the Otahuhu free kindergarten, and councillors are wondering if it is a blessing or otherwise. The kindergarten was offered and accepted the lease of a large dwelling house with an extensive frontage to the Great South Road. They have got a lease for five years rent free, which means that the owners are exempted from rates to the extent of £120 per annum. Mr. T. W. Grey said this matter needed some publicity, as ratepayers did not realise it meant that they -were subsidising the kindergarten to the amount of £2 10/ per week. The finance committee reported having taken legal advice/ and found that the council was However, an •advertising firm had signs erected on the section, and if they were allowed to remain and rental were paid, the land would be rateable. The kindergarten committee had offered to hand over the rental of £20 per annum to the council in lieu of having the signs removed. It was agreed to accept this offer. .
