FLUCTUATIONS IN SHARES.

BUSINESS STILL QUIET.

Business on the local Stock Exchange improved yesterday afternoon, but this morning again opened quietly, and only one sale was recorded at the 10 o'clock call. At the fresh bidding there was a steady inquiry in the banking section, but buyers kept rigidly to their recent limits. In the case of Unions the bidder dropped back to £6 9/. New Zealands were again available at £2 4/,. with best buyers at £2 3/6. Amongst pastoral companies Abraham and Williams prefs. were again wanted at £3 5/, and Goldsbrough, Mo'rts at 19/9. There was renewed inquiry for Colonial Sugar at £32 10/, bringing an offer to sell at £35. At the Noon Call.

Better prices were offered for several Government loans at the midday call, but no sales were recorded in these lines. Buyers offered £97 7/6 for the iYz per cent, 1939, and £.96 10/ for the 5% per cent, 1933, loans. The latter quotation was an advance of 10/. The 5% Inscribed loan was asked for at £93 10/, as compared with £92 at the first call. The SV& Loans, 1933 and 1936, were wanted at £98 15/, but the only seller asked par for one line. Tin shares firmed slightly, buyers offering 4/H for Kuala Kampars and 4/6 for Eawangs. Robinson Ice Cream shares, were placed at 14/6, after which buyers dropped 3d. Goldsbrougli, JMort shares firmed to buyers at £1 0/6, but sales did not follow. A buyer came in for Tooheys Brewery shares at 12/, "but quoted. Commercial Bank shares changed hands at 13/2, with further demand at the same price, and no sellers under 13/6. U n i°n Banks recovered a little, buyers advancing their offer to £6 10/.
