TROUT FISHING SEASON.
PROSPECTS AT ROTORUA
GOOD SPORT ANTICIPATED.
ROTORUA, Tuesday.
It is almost impossible to forecast with any degree of accuracy the prospects of the fishing season in the Lake region, but from 'present indications there should be some good sport after the opening of the season next month. The run "of fish back into the lakes has been earlier than last year, and many of the river mouths arc noticeably clear of fish. On the other hand, a lot fine fish were seen running up the Fairy Springs stream during the recent rains, and there arc other indications that the late spawning is still in progress. Many of the lakes are still very low. Rotorua has risen a few inches as a result of recent rains, and Tarawera and the Green Lake have retained their normal levels. Ta.upo has reached the highest level known for two years. Although these are the only lakes which have risen,' it is recognised that the flooded creeks and rivers have brought down much feed, which will benefit the fish in the lakes.
The Government has been particularly active this year in the important work of restocking, and operations arc still being carried out busily. In the Rotorua district alone the frv liberated total 1,7.10,000. In Taupo 'last week 150,000 were liberated, and 100,000 have been distributed in the Bay of Plenty streams.
The curator of fish and game, Mr. A. Kean, thinks there has been a good strike of fry, and healthy youngsters can be seen in many streams. On a recent clear day a large number of good fish were seen in Tarawera and Green Lakes.
