UNEMPLOYMENT TAX.
SPECIAL INCOME PROVISION.
PROCEDURE TO BE FOLLOWED
LIABILITY IN" NOVEMBER.
(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.)
WELLINGTON, this day.
Thousands of New Zealanders will be required to fill in declarations within the next few weeks to' comply with the provisions of the emergency unemployment relief legislation.
Payments are already being made at the rate of threepence in the pound on wages and salaries, but there are other forms of income which the unemployment commissioner can levy, and this process commences on November 1. Preparations are being made, and it is understood that the system to be followed will be that persons deriving income from any source other, than salary or wages will be required to make a return showing the details thereof, so that the threepence in the pound tax can be paid by them on two-thirds of such income obtained during the year which ended on March. 31, 1931. This tax is to be paid in equal instalments on November 1 and February 1 next.
Many taxpayers lave already disclosed in income tax. returns certain income which is not represented by salary or wages, and this class, it is understood, need not repeat their detailed information to the. post office officials. However, they will be obliged to make a declaration that they prefer to deal direct with the Income Tax Department, and they will be permitted to do so. Others will require to provide post office officials with a declaration of this special class of income for taxing purposes. Details of the procedure will be shortly prescribed in regulations now being prepared. '■
