The sea tales and Scottish myths of "Fiona.Macl e od" (William Sharpe) were discerningly dealt with by the Rev. Wilna L. Constable in her interesting lecture at the open evening of the Lyceum Club Tecently. Mrs. J. C. Dickenson, acting-president, presided. Born at Paisley in 1855, this writer in his early years came under the Celtic influence of an old Highland nurse. 1 Although many volumes were published under his own name, those which were published under the pen name of "Fiona Macleod," in which he treats entirely with Scotland's legends and myths, are the works by which he will be longest remembered. The lecturer focussed her attention first upon the life and upbringing of William Sharpe, showing how, in spite of a-university training, his artistic temperament rendered him unsuitable for routine work, so that eventually he turned entirely to his pen .for his livelihood. The curious dissimilarity between the writings of the same author and the persistence with which he maintained his incognito until his death- was interestingly referred to. His travels and youthful escapades, and the early imaginative trend of his mind were also noted. Miss M. A. Parker also spoke. A hearty vote of appreciation was accorded to Mrs. Constable.
