Tie Whangarei County Council to-day received notification fjrom the Minister of Public Works that, after giving careful consideration to the' matter of a subsidy for the construction of Keay's Deviation Eoad, he was unable to alter his previous decision in the matter. . The council passed a resolution that the Minister be written to strongly urging the desirability of placing unemployed single men on the construction of this important link, instead of using such, labour in the improvement of main highways. Information was also received that the. Mareden. Point Eoad blockage was being attended to. It was reported that a wire had been received advising the district engineer at Whangarei that £100 had been made available, and that I work could be commenced nest week.
