AUCKLAND EAST SEAT.

"We want men to handle the country's; affairs!"' says "1914 Digger." Well, they have been handling them for a good many generations, and the result is nothing to brag about Whv not welcome the assistance of women for* a change? They are often useful _ in straightening out a muddle. Their logical minds have devised and carried out more practical help for the unemployed soldiers during the past two winters than the '•'listening to. their troubles/ 5 admiringly quoted by yottr correspondent. Perhaps the polk may refleet the fact that a little help is worth a great deal of pity. Also, as '-Digger" has introduced the subject, it may be said that Miss Melville has no i-eed to fear a comparison of iher record a≤ a city councillor with Sir George Richardson's record as an administrator. However, that is by the way. Women's quarrel with Sir Georse over the Auckland East seat is not that "he is standing for Parliament. They quite agree with him that it is Ms duty to serve his country in peace as well as in war. But wihen there* were plenty of other vacant seats for Mm to choose from, why did he allow himself to be persuaded to stand for the seat which the women had chosen for their candidate after he lad said that he had no intention of doing so? A. E. ELECTOR.
