OUR ENGLISH MARKET.
EFFECT OF PROTECTION.
(To the Editor.) We in New Zealand should ponder -rerj carefully over "'Englishman's" letter in your issue of to-day. It should do us good to* see ourselves as others see us. We are too fom? of throwing our chests out and patting ourselves on the back. During a recent visit to the Old Country I cculd not fail to "be impressed by the growing resentment of tie untiring effort* being made by Australians and New Zealanders to curtail their imports from Britain and at the same time to cry ou against Britain's imports of foodstuffs and wool from anybody but themselves. Protective tariffs in' Britain in the near future are as certain as the sunset. When they arrive we shall find her looking to her ajar nelgLbours for rec-iprocal trade, and who will blame her? Argentina is going all out for the lanfb trade, and there is little donot that a» soon as they have established the correct type of sheep "for this purpose we shall have somethin,,, else to worry about besides Russian butter. British companies will not indefinitely send their ships empty to these shores for the honour of taking back New Zealand produce when Danish and other Continental produce can be delivered in London fresh daily. We are 13.000 miles away. BROAD-MINDED.
