RELIEF CAMP.
FIFTY MEN AT KAHANGAHAKE
BACKBLOCKS WORK FAVOURED.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) PAEROA, Thursday. Preparations are well in hand for the establishment at Karangahake of a relief camp under the scheme for giving single men work under the Main Highways Board on secondary highways. The Public Works Department has taken over a county council shed and two old houses, and is having them fitted up to accommodate oO men. A Paeroa man has been engaged as cook. It is proposed to widen and straighten the Paeroa-Waihi Road on both sides of Karangahake. •
The local unemployment committee, notified of the eut in the allocation of money for scheme five, decided that the only remedy was to reduce- each man's rations pro rata. Taken over a period of a month, it will mean that the maximum wages which may be earned by men on local relief works will be 25/ for men with three or more children and 18/7 per week for men with two children, and 9/ for single men. The committee decided that the organisation of vegetable growing be proceeded with as early as possible. Donations of seed, etc., may be left at the Paeroa Borough Council's office. The committee also decided to support the protest against work being done on the highways instead of genuine backblocks roads.
