OBITUARY.

MRS. EMILY THOMPSON,

A former resident of Wanganui, Mrs. Emily Thompson, widow of Mr. Charlee Thompson, of London, died at Rotorua. She was born in Wanganui in 1865, and soon after her marriage with Mr. Charles Thompson they went to live in England. Twelve years'later she came back to New Zealand, her husband having died in 1915. Three sons of Mrs. Thompson served in the Great War, and two were killed. Both had records for dietinmiehed service, One being decorated for gallant conduct on the field. Mrs. Thompson is survived by three sons and one daughter, Mrs. N. Vaughan, of Rotorua.

MR. R. V. SMITH.

After an illness of only a few days, Mr. R. V. Smith, B.Sc, a teacher of the Paeroa District High School; passed away at his home in Paeroa, aged 32 years. He was the sixth son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Smith, of 33, England Street, Ponsonby, and was educated at Ponsonby Primary School and the Auckland University College, where he obtained his degree. For a short time Le was a minister of the Baptist Church, and then began school teaching. He was secretary to the Primary Schools' Rugby Football Union, and also a member of the local branch of the Labour party. He leaves a wife and three children.

MRS. ALEXANDER TELFER.

One of the earliest European residents of Taranaki, Mrs. Alexander Telfttf, has died at Urenui aged 94 yeara. The ninetieth anniversary of the arrival of the ship Amelia Thompson at Taranaki was celebrated last Thursday, and Mrs. Telfer was one of the two surviving passengers by that veeSel. Her earliest recollection of New Plymouth wa* when it was just sandhills, where the family at first lived in e raupo wharfc. In IS7I Miss Johnston was married to Mr. Alexander Telfer and they went to live at Urenui, and she was often month* at a time without seeing anbther white woman. She was present at the birth of the* late Sir Maui Pomare, and wfte ever keenly interested in his career, Mrs. Telfer leaves two sons.
