UPPER HARBOUR WHARVES.

QUESTION, OF LIGHTING.

A reply was received from the Auckland Harbour Board last evening by the Birkenhead Borough Council to the request. to provide' a light on Birkdale wharf. This was to the effect that the board's j experience of its up-river wharves had been that anything breakable or movable was rapidly destroyed. The cost of maintaining a service on these wharves, which were so difficult to supervise, would be excessive, and the board could not see its way to entertain the proposal to light them. It was willing to give the local authorities permission to instal ana maintain lights, if they so desired, provided they were able to obtain the necessary authority for the expenditure. Mr.; P. Derinen: Who would be responsible if an accident occurred for lack of proper flighting,? The Mayor (Mr. J. P. McPhail): Not the-borough council; it is outside our jurisdiction. Mr. :E.. J. Sinel pointed out that there was a light on the Greenhithe wharf. The Mayor said the light would be turned on automatically, so that no supervision was involved. A deputation was appointed to ask the Harbour Board to undertake the duty of lighting the wharf.
