BIRKENHEAD COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor, Mr. J. P. McPhail, presided. Water. —The waterworks engineer reported that the surface of Lake Pupuke had risen one inch during the month, being eight inches below sea level. Motorists Under Age.—Mr. J. Prickett called attention to the number of youths between 14 and. 16 years of age driving motor vehicles. He cited a case of a lad of 12 or 13 in charge of a milk truck, and said it was certain he. would not have a license. The Mayor undertook to have the matter investigated. New Buildings.—Permits for three new buildings of a total value of £1085 were issued. Councillors'commented that, this indicated a turn of the tide toivards progress in the borough. Volunteer Defence.—Mr. H. A. Campbell was appointed to attend the public meeting convened by the Mayor of .Auckland to form a Territorial Force Association, and to act on the central executive thereof. • • Appreciation.—The secretary of the Birkdale Fruitgrowers' Association, Mr. W. A. Christensen, forwarded a resolution passed by that body, expressing approval and appreciation of the work being carried out by the council in the Birkdale area under No. 5 scheme. Vehicular Ferry Service, —Mr. R. E. Champtaloup, touring manager of the Auckland Automobile Association, wrote that the association would be • only too willing to assist in securing an improved vehicular ferry service between Auckland and Birkenhead. Messrs. G. B. Hewson and R. R. Hayman reported having waited on the Devonport Ferry Company, in conjunction with representatives of the Northcote Council, with a view to getting an extension of the evening vehicular ferry service. The Hon. E. W. Alison had held out the hope that the company would be able to put on an extra boat from Monday to Thursday, leaving Birkenhead at 8.15 p.m. The last trip on Saturday night would also probably be altered to call at Northcote. The council decided to await the draft of the proposed new time-table.
