FIRE PREVENTION.
A DOMINION « DRIVE."
CLEAN UP WEEK IN NOVEMBER,
Following the publication of figures showing the alarming nature of the fire losses in the Dominion, a letter was received from the Minister of Internal Affairs at last night's meeting of the City Council, outlining Government proposals for dealing with the question, and adding that experts had reported that the fire waste was not due to inefficiency on the part of fire brigades, but that the losses were due in the main to the fact that effective measures were not taken to prevent fires. The Government had inaugurated a fire prevention "drive" and asked the council to cooperate. Reporting on the above,, the Inspector of Fire Brigades said it was proposed to organise a fire prevention and cleanup week in every town in New Zealand, and it was hoped to interest all commercial organisations in the work. If the council was prepared to fall in with the proposal the week beginning November 23 was suggested as suitable. It was decided to reply that the council would be glad to co-operate, and the matter was left in the hands of the finance committee.
