RETURNS FOR LAST WEEK,

An apparent increase of 775 in the unemployment registrations for New Zealand is shown in the returns for the week ended August 31. The total was 50,033.
The Minister of Labour, the Hon. S. G. Smith, said to-day that the number of men placed under No. 5 scheme was 36,097, and 4929 were engaged under No: 4a scheme, 1177 under No. 4b scheme and 96 were placed in other employment. Men for whom no work was provided numbered 7734, but many, said the Minister, would be standing down under the requirement of No. 5 scheme that they should do so one week in each four. Others would be of the class that was not employable owing to inability to undertake manual work.
Particulars of registrations in the main centres are:—Auckland, with dependents 3272, without dependents 4113; Wellington, 2523 and 2331; Christchurch, 3310 and 1856; Dunedin, 1683 and 1248; Invercargill, 896 and 432.
The total registrations in the main centres, with the figures for the previous week in parentheses, follow:— Auckland, 7385 (7320); Wellington, 4854 (4762); Christchurch, 5166 (5041); Dunedin, 2931 (2831); Invercargill, 1328 (1287).
