TROTTING.

NEW BRIGHTON CLUB.

THE SPRING MEETING.

GOOD FIELDS IN MOST RACES. TO-MORROW'S PROSPECTS DISCUSSED. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, this day. There should be a good afternoon's sport to-morrow, when the New Brighton Trotting Club will hold its first meeting of the new season. Good fields are engaged in all the races, with the exception of the mile saddle event, which has attracted only five acceptors. The classes are not tight and therefore afford an opportunity for owners to race youDg horses and others who are not yet capable of competing in the highest grade races. The mile track will suit a. number of competitors, who will find it in much better condition than when last it was used. Improvers' Handicap. There is a large field of 32 in the mile and a half trotters' race, many of them having no form to commend their chances. Horses who have been working well include Author. Shaw, Gay Baiej, Rey, Red Eagle, Tiny Guy and Our Bingen, all of whom are on the limit of the handicap. On 12yds Lucky Voyage may be the best, while if Fairyland should go away well she may put up a good showing from 24yds. It is not likely that any of the backmarkers will have much chance with the improving lot in front of them. The winner may come from Red Eagle, Gay Paree, Fairyland and Lucky Voyage. Belfast Handicap. Another field of 32 will contest the slow class mile and a half event for pacers, in which 19 are on the end of the handicap. Peter Locanda, when he raced at Ashburton in June, worked like an improving sort, and he has been doing well in his recent training work. Aimworthy won at Ashburton at the end of June, going 3.31 2-5 for the distance. Nyallo Silk is another improving young pacer, while Eureka Boy has shown considerable improvement of late in his training work. Ron is a moody pacer, who can show speed when in the humour, and Silver Bingen has come on a lot recently. Aimworthy, Peter Locanda and Nyallo Silk may finish in that order. Burwood Handicap. There should be a keen contest for the : chief two-mile event. Ariki can have little chance, judged on his recent efforts, and although Tactless is staying better than formerly, he may lack the necessary stamina. Impromptu may find the large track more to his liking than Addington, where he put up a good race in the Islington Handicap. Brentlight (who has shown a great improvement over the distance) and Impromptu are the best of the limit division. Lifebuoy and Our George are on 12yds. The former is not a reliable pacer, as to gait, but he paced very evenly in the Islington Handicap, finishing with a fine dash in second place to Ayrmont Chimes and going 4.32 4-5. He is, however, a bad horse to follow.- Black Lion, Lily Harold, John Jinks and Xetta Oro are a strong quartet on 24yds. John Jinks is now racing in something like the form he was expected to show after his. brilliant two-year-old racing. Black Lion did not race well at Addington, although well backed,- but he has had most of his successes on grass tracks and he may do well. Netta Oro is improving over the distance, but although well backed at Addington, she could do no better than get third in two of her efforts. On the first day she went 4.28 4-5, when third to Ayrmont Chimes and John Jinks. Sunfish is not racing well, and Macaranda will need to improve considerably to be in the money. St. George is moody and Jolly Pet is lame, while Play Wave's chance is remote. It looks as though the finish will be fought out between Netta Oro, John Jinks and Brentlight.' Sea View Handicap. The slow class mile and a quarter should provide one of the best contests of the day, as there are a number of improving pacers in the field. In a field of 14 there are 10 on the front line, and the winner will probably come from that division. Matchmaker created a very favourable impression when he won last season at Timaru, where he went 2.51 2-5. for the distance. In that race he met Pronto Bingen on the same mark, and beat him by a neck, and they are again together. Nona Bingen, who is improving fast, is almost certain to race well, and if Pageant d'Or makes a good beginning he may be close up to the leaders at the end. Matchmaker, Nona Bingen and Pronto Bingen read best. Autumn Handicap. A useful field will contest the two-mile trotters' race. Iwanta looks the best of the limit division, as neither Great Burton nor Jade stays well. Great Way showed speed in his races at Addington, but it takes him some time to settle down. Repute, is racing well up to a mile and a half. Nelson Boy did not do well in his recent efforts, and Trampcrisp was altogether out of form when he raced at Addington last month. Nelson Ata and White »Satin are both on marks from which they will require to show a good deal of improvement to have any chance. The final placings may be Mountain Mist, Iwanta and Great Way. Dash Handicap. The best of the limit division in the mile harness event may be Dusolina, who is a useful mare and on the improve. Nona Bingen is engaged in the mile and a quarter earlier in the day. Some Guy won at Ashburton over a mile and a half, and this promising young pacer may keep the limit division busy from 12yds. Lough Neagh went 2.15 2-5 when he was third to Elate Logan and Macaranda on the same course last February. Holly Bank may be reserved for this event in preference to the mile and a quarter, in which case the imported pacer may show up prominently, as he has a good turn of speed and may race well on the grass track. Baron Bingen, on 48yds, does not look like a winner. Dusolina, Some Guy and Lough Neagh may do best. Wainoni Handicap. The fast mile and a quarter will probably produce a keen contest. John Jinks seems certain to be troublesome. I Teremoa's recent efforts have not been at all impressive, but although Our George raced badly at Addington, he may do better on the larger track. Mister Pointer looks the best of the 12yds Jot, as Vecto has not been racing well. Happy Land will find plenty of opposition from Sunny Bob and Eugene de Oro from the same mark. Pluto usually races best over a two-mile course, and Vesuvius does not look like having any chance from 84yds. Trimmer is too unreliable to be considered. Mister Pointer, John Jinks and Our George should find most favour from backers. Electric Handicap. A small and weak field will contest the mile saddle event, and it is such a poor one that Banffshire Lad should have little difficulty in accounting for the stake. Zella and Bay Admiral may follow the imported pacer home. The acceptances are:— 12.15—IMPROVERS' HANDICAP of 110 sovs. One mile and a half. Limit 3.50. Mahineranga Lt. Fame Audubon Lt Scribbler . . .
