DISPUTE ON TIRI
When members of the Seamen's Union refused to sign on until a wiper had been engaged, the motor vessel Tiri was manned by non-union labour to enable her to sail for Norfolk Island last even ing,
The master, two officers, two engineers uicl -a cook were engaged yesterday norning, and three deck hands were to )e signed on at one o'clock. The owner's •epresentative, Mr. J. Noone, would not ;ake a wiper, however,' and members of ;he Seamen's Union would not sign on anless he did so. Non-unionists were therefore signed on, and loaded 20 tons }f cargo before the ship sailed. A similar dispute arose when the motor vessel Taupata, also built by Mr. Geo. Niccol, was commissioned for a trip to Norfolk Island last December. Like tin Taupata, the Tiri is built' for the New Zealand coastal trade, and on her return from Norfolk Island will be offered for sale.
