COLLEGE LIBRARIES.
The Council of the Auckland University College has accepted the conditional offer of the Carnegie Corporation to 'consider granting £1000 a year for five years for additions to the College library, and there seems to be every prospect of this welcome improvement being made in the cultural equipment of the institution. That the libraries of University Colleges in New Zealand do not meet the needs of students is well recognised, and three years ago the New Zealand University asked "the Carnegie Corporation for £20,000 to improve the libraries of the constituent colleges. The Commission of 1925 was emphatic on the need for improvement. It noted with much concern "the extreme inadequacy of the college libraries," and recommended greatly increased provision—a capital grant to make up deficiencies and a much larger annual grant to keep collections up to date. But while New Zealanders should be grateful to the Carnegie Corporation for the help that it offers the University, they should remember their own duty in this direction. The Carnegie offer should remind our wealthy eitizens of the needs of our ( University Colleges.
