CHILD LOCKED IN CELLAR. BUCHAREST, July IC. The mother died when the girl was born, and her father, a peasant named Vasile Continescu, determined to inherit the ( whole of his wife's property. He therefore concealed the existence "of the child, who, during the whole of her life, was kept in an unlighted cell. She had never seen daylight until her escape owing to her father omitting to lock the door. The girl wandered into the street, and became terror-stricken by the unfamiliar sights of normal life. Peasants and police surrounded her as if she were a wild beast. Continescu confessed everything.
