AUCKLANDERS AT ADDINGTON.
The appearance of the handicap for the Metropolitan Club's meeting next month brings the new season a step nearer. Local interest will centre In the prospects of Jewel Pointer, Mountain Dell, Great Ballin and Great Peter, and all seem to be on their correct marks. Jewel Pointer is not badly treated in being on a 4.2-1 mark, seeing that he won the Prince of Wales Handicap at his last start last month from a 4.25 mark. It is hard to folipw the system, because he was penalised one for finishing second in the Mark Memorial on, the opening day, and for a win on che second day has only received the saino penalty. Mountain Dell has been left on 4.27, from which mark she was beaten twice last month, but at her best she is well able to beat her handicap on a dirt track such as Addington. Great Ballin is on 2.46, in a mile and a. quarter, and has received no penalty for finishing second off the same mark at the June fixture. Me should have a good chance. Peter Pirate is on the limit (4.35) in the Queen Mary Handicap and he cannot complain, as he finished second in the Adams Memorial from a 4.36 mark. The one horse who seems to have none the best of it is Warplane, who is owned in Auckland but trained in Christchureh. His last start at two miles was at the Waikato meeting, when he failed to get a place from a 4.34 mark. That handicap was made by Mr. Goosman. Mr. Paul last handicapped Warplane on 4.32, from which the horse finished third and actually Mr. Paul himself has let Warplane up one second in putting him on 4.33. Against this is his defeat at Waikato from 4.34.
