Sommerville, of Wellington, is in Auckland. She leaves for London by the Port Huon. SOCIAL GATHERINGS. On Thursday evening a farewell party was held at the residence of Mrs. W. F. Hollinger, in honour of Mr. Jim Merritt, who is leaving the district of Waimauku. Musical items were given by Mrs. J. Hatton and Messrs. J. Johnston, K. Bruce and H. Queenin. On behalf of his many friends Mr. Pat Cane presented Mr. Merritt with a fountain pen engraved with his initials. Among those present were Mrs. W. F. Hollinger, Mrs. H. Cane, sen., Mrs. J. Hatton, Mies Alice Lee, Miss F. Koll (Stanley Bay), and Misses Cane (3). * * * * A hard up dance was held in the Waimauku hall on Saturday evening, in aid of St. Martin's Anglican Memorial Church. There was a large attendance and the many hard up costumes caused a lot of fun. The prizes for best costumes were won by Miss Edith Coughlan and Mr. Don. Kerr-Taylor. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss R. Tye and Mr. Cole (Auckland), and the spot waltz by Miss Alice Lee and Mr. S. Phillips. The weight of a plum pudding was guessed by Miss Marion Wintour, who won the pudding. * * • * A farewell social was given to Mr. C. J. Dew and family at Kakepuku recently. Besides occupying the position of factory manager for the past eight years, Mr. Dew was secretary of the local school committee. Mr. B. H. Budden, on behalf of the suppliers of the Kakepuku Dairy Company, asked Mr. and Mrs. • Dew to accept a handsome oak clock and a bronze fruit stand as evidence of the high esteem in which they are held. A progressive "500" evening was held on' Saturday in Taupiri by th- Croquet Club. The first prizes were won by Mrs. Shepherd and Mr. Adams, and the consolation by Mrs. W. Waring and Mr. N. Wilson. A meeting of the Te Atatu branch of the League of Mothers was held in the Methodist Church recently, when Mrs. Illingworth presided. The president thanked all who had so ably helped her to make the past year a pleasant and an educational one. Officers for the ensuing year are: President, Mrs. Illingworth; vice-president, Mrs. Shale; hon. secretary, Mrs. Pijacun; treasurer, Miss Moor; librarian, Mrs. Shale. An essay on "The Sanctity of Marriage" was read by Mrs. Shale, who emphasised the need for a true Christian union, with the spirit of self-sacrifice, this making a sanctified marriage a successful achievement. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs. Peat and Mrs. Shale.
Miss Ruby Smith was hostess at a party given for her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. David Smith, on Saturday evening on the occasion of the celebration of their silver wedding at their residence, Coombesdale Road, Remuera. A jolly time was spent with games and competitions, interspersed with musical and elocutionary items. The guest of the evening wore navy blue satin beaute. Amongst those present were: Mesdames Brown, Card well, Bater, Jenkins, Watt, Parvin, Bennett, Hart, McLaren (2), McMurray, Johnston, Gibson, Wilson, Misses Watt, Parvin, Gray, Herd (3), Hyde (2), Littlejohn, Thompson, Ruston, Smith, Jenkins. During the evening musical and elocutionary items were contributed by Mesdames Johnston and Cardwell, Miss Ruston and Messrs. S. Marshall and J. Cardwell. Mrs. Cardwell and Miss Littlejohn acted as accompanists. Mr. and Mrs. Smith, who are natives of Scotland, came to New Zealand just after their marriage, and have resided in Auckland for close on 25 years.
The Manumaire Tramping Club held a dance last evening in the Mount Albert Bowling Club pavilion, which was tastefully decorated with green and silver, the club colours. During the evening the Monte Carlo was won by Miss D. Halliwell and Mr. A. Amos. The Women's Unemployment Association assisted by Chandlers, Ltd., held a dance at Romano's Cabaret last evening, to assist the funds for unemployed women. Songs- and recitations were rendered by Misses Aroha Herron, and Hannah Basher. The Fritz Von Zalinski orchestra gave their services, and supplied many of the latest airs. ♦ ♦ # • An enjoyable evening was spent at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. G. Thomas, sen., Pukekohe, on Saturday, in honour of the 50th annivereary of their wedding. The evening was opened by bagpipe music by Mr. A. R. Mclntyre, of Papatoetoe. During the evening Miss Maisie Thomas danced the Highland fling, accompanied on tho bagpipes. Many other musical items, recitations and games were rendered by the guests. Miss Doreen Warden presented Mrs. Thomas with a bouquet of violets. The bride and groom's health was proposed by Mr. S. W. House, of Mangere. Among the guests present were: Mesdames S. W. House, G H. A dance and card evening was held by the St. Joseph's Tennis Club in the St. Joseph's Hall, Otahuhu, last night. The first Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Graham and Mr. D. James, and the second by Miss Lawes and Mr. Johnston. In the card tournament Mrs. White and Mrs Brosnan won the prizes in the ladies' section. Mr. F. Ellery, first, and Mr. Woods, second, won the gentlemen s trophies, while the consolation prize was awarded to Mr. H. Burton. The Holy Trinity Social Club held a dance in the Parish Hall, Otahuhu, last night. The club's patron, the Rev. R. J. Stanton, welcomed the members of the Henderson Dramatic Society, who presented a short play entitled "Between the Soup and the Savoury." The cast was Misses E. Roberts, W. Parr and L. Ingham. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mrs. Flood and Mrs. H. C. Fenton, while the prize -winiffcrs in the "500" tournament were Mrs. Speed and Mrs. Woods. During supper an extra was played by Miss W. The members of St. Luke's Church Ladies' Guild, Mount Albert, held a delightful At Home in the church hall yesterday afternoon. There was a large attendance of members of the parish and their friends, and an enjoyable time was spent. Clusters of greenery and early spring flowers made the hall attractive, while colour Avas supplied by blue and orange flowers which were suspended overhead. Around the sides of the room branches of nikau palms were effective, and on the stage was more greenery. Pale yellow and bright yellow narcissi, arranged in deep bowls, were also on the stage. The guests were received on arrival by Mrs. R. G. Coats, president of the guild, who wore a frock of black georgette, with white fox furs and black felt hat. She carried a posy of violets and primroses. She was assisted by Mrs. E. G. Fuller, vice-president of the guild, Mrs. E. H. Whitmore and Mrs. A. Atkinson. During the afternoon a programme of excellent items was much enjoyed, and a delectable afternoon tea was served. Songs were given by Mrs. H. McGregor, Mrs. 11. T. Kin?- and Miss Xancye Hanna. Mrs. H. R. Hesketh played violin solos, and Mis. Kenneth Gordon gave sketches from Dickens. At the conclusion of the programme the ,£ev. R. G. Coats thanked those taking part for contributing to the success of the afternoon.
A very pleasant afternoon was arranged by Mrs. Howard, convener of the gardening circle, yesterday, when a large number of members of the circle met in the lounge of the Lyceum Club. Mrs. Howard read an interesting letter from Mrs. Tattersfield, who is at present in Europe, giving an account of her experiences on the Continent. A short musical programme suitable to the occasion was rendered, and was much appreciated. Mrs. R. S. Whitley sang "A Garden is a Lovesome Thing," "It is Only a Tiny Garden," "Betty's Garden" and "The Woodpecker." Mrs. Hobday sang, "Bring Me Red Roses," "Happy Song," "Roses" and "Dead Mountain Flowers." The accompaniments were played by Mise Kent. Mrs. Howard recited "The Glory of the Garden" by Rudyard Kipling, and afterwards gave an interesting talk on the pleasures of amateur gardening. A display of flowers ■was made by the members, which included a bowl of lovely white and mauve hellebore, and real English snowdrops brought by Mrs. Howard. Some lovely anemones and stocks brought by Mrs. Stubbs, lachenalia and nemesia from Mrs. Macmorran, boronia and a native rock lily (rengarenga) from Mrs. Clinch, a basket of early spring flowers from Mrs. Hewlett, a bowl of protea from Mrs. Kinnear, a rare rockery plant (Kalanchoe Somaliensis) from Mrs. Douglas, a lovely basket of pink camellias and maidenhair fern from Mrs. Brookes, and a Japanese prunus from Mrs. Astley. Afternoon tea was afterwards served in the dining room.
A dance was held in the Masonic Hall, Devonport, last evening, under the auspices of the Star of Melroee Lodge, 1.0.0. F. The dance was one of a series being held to swell the funds of the children's Christmas tree fund, and Christmas ball which is given annually by the lodge to the children. Supper was served by the committee. Among those present were: Miss Le Quesne (California), moonbeam taffeta and silver lace; Miss Sharp (Hamilton), pink taffeta and tulle; Miss Miller (Wellington), black georgette with sequins; Mrs. Whilley, black silk lace; Mrs. S.
