AUCKLAND BOARD MEETING. MISCELLANEOUS BUSINESS. TEACHERS OUT OF EMPLOYMENT. "The Unemployment Board will not allow any particular class of the community to be dealt with in that way," said Mr. A. Burns, chairman of the Auckland Education Board thie morning, when the board received a letter from the Vauxhall School Committee suggesting that representations might be made to the Unemployment Board for the appointment of unemployed teachers to temporary vacancies, and that their salaries should be drawn from its funds. School Subsidies. The Education Department advised that a limifeo" amount would be available for subsidies on voluntary contributione for essential services. The board was, therefore, asked to forward the applications by committees for subsidies in the order of their urgency to the Department. It was decided to act in accordance with the instructions. Teachers' Examinations. It was decided to co-operate with the Department tn arranging for the examinations for teachers' certificates to be held from August 25 to , September 3 next. Members agreed to accept the invitation of the Community Sunshine Association to attend the ceremony to be held in connecti6n with the unveiling of a portrait of the late Mrs. N. E. Ferner at the Sunshine School, on Saturday next. Pictures for Schools. In connection with the suggestion that spare pictures should be obtained from the Municipal Art Gallery for the purpose of being hung in the corridors of the Napier Street School, the city librarian advised that similar requests from the Elam School of Art and other institutions had been declined. In the circumstances he did not consider any good purpose would be served in asking the authorities for pictures, which would be liable to damage if hung in school corridors. It was decided to state the position to the Napier Street School Committee. Tennis on Sundays. "Our regulations prevent it," remarked Mr. Burns, when the Tokanui School Committee wrote asking the board to reconsider its decision not to allow the use of the school ground by the local tennis chib for Sunday play. Mr. E. C. Banks: They have no business playing on Sundays, anyhow. Music Festival. It was agreed to give permission to school choirs which are to take part in the Auckland School Choirs' Association Festival, on August 18, to attend rehearsals in the Town Hall at 1.30 p.m. on three days. Dental Treatment. Owing to staff limitations, the Director of Dental Hygiene advised that it was regretted that he was unable to arrange for a dental nurse to visit Great Barrier Island either annually or biennially. In connection with the request for dental treatment for pupils of tKe Colville School, it wae explained that a nurse visited Coromandel once every six weeks, and if it was possible for Colville children to attend the latter clinic she would be instructed to give the required treatment. Similar replies were received regarding the matter of the attendance of Motutara children at the Huapai or Helensville clinics. Grant to School. The Department wrote notifying that a grant of £350 had been made towards the cost of effecting ground improvements at the Onehunga School. The grant is to be regarded as the extent of the Department's liability for ground improvements and for the completion of fencing and drainage., Fall in School Rolls. It was decided to reduce the staff at the Brixton Road School at the end of the present term owing to the reduction of the roll number from 560 to 533. The Epsom Committee wrote regarding the probable reduction in the staff of the local school for a similar reason, and suggesting that the board adjust the att!i*daiices at neighbouring schools. It was decided to supply the latter schools with lists of proposed transfers to meet the position. The Epsom School roll 'iPs fallen from 519 to 489. It was decided that accommodation tor special classes be provided at the Grafton School, instead of at Newton East, as at present.
