BRAVERY REWARDED.
Gallantry of Naval Ratings in Submarine Disaster. MEDALS AND PROMOTION. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, July 16. The First Lord of the Admiralty, Mr. A. V. Alexander, announced in the House of Commons yesterday that the King had awarded to Petty-Officer Willis the "Albert Medal in gold, in recognition of his bravery in connection with the loss of the submarine Poseidon off Wei-hai-wei. The King had also awarded the medal of the Order of the British Empire, Military Division, for meritorious services to " Able Seamen Vincent Nagle and Edmund G. Holt. The Minister added that Willis was offered promotion to warrant rank, but preferred to be rated as chief petty officer, and his promotion to chief petty officer has been confirmed from the same date. The promotion has been approved of Leading Seaman Clark to be petty officer, and of Able Seamen Nagle and Holt to be leading seamen. , In his statement in the House of Commons last week Mr. Alexander described how, after the submarine was sunk in a collision, Willis took charge of the men who were trapped in the forepart, and organised their escape, with great coolness and ability.
