CANOE FOUND IN" RIVER,
INDICATIONS OF ACCIDENT.

WAJROA (H. 8.), this day, Haenga Paretipua, the leading Maori chief of the district, left home yesterday to gather firewood. His canoe, axe and coat "were found by the side of the river, marks nearby indicating that he slipped. The police are dragging the river, as it is feared the chief may hav 6 been drowned.
