COMMON GAMING HOUSE.
FIXE OF £100 IN OTAGO.
ASSOCIATION SECRETARY.

DUNEDIN, this day,
John Erskine, charged with keeping a common gaming house, was to-day fined £100. Police gave evidence that defendant was secretary of the Otago Sportsmen's Association, and that a considerable amount of betting material from various parts of the Dominion was found when his premises were raided.
The police stated that they, found 298 code telegrams from places where race meetings were held". They regarded the sportsmen's association as really a bookmakers' association. When the telegrams were decoded the contents were communicated to all members, giving results of races and dividends.
