WINTER BOWLING.

MATCHES LAST SATURDAY.

COUNCIL MEETS ON THURSDAY

VETERAN BOWLERS IN OFFICE.

(By TRUXDLER.)

A nicer spring day than last Saturday could hardly have been expected at the end of September, instead of the beginning of July, and the conditions were very enjoyable for bowling, as the greens had dried up very well. The Edwin Stars gave every bit as good a match as was confidently expected when it was whispered that Grey Lynn -intended to make a determined bid with the team which won the Christinas tournament: F. J. Baildon, W. Mincham, W. Livensidge, H. Whittle. They fully lived up to their reputation, and were usually a little ahead of the Onehunga holders, although the veteran "Sandy" Brown had picked the eyes out of the club when he first made his attack on Mount Eden, and they were again with him on Saturday, viz., T. A. George, I. J. Sutherland and E. B. Wright. The visitors were 17 to 13 on the 17th head, and theit Onehunga scored ' three singles. George and Sutherland each had a bowl on the jack in the last head, and Brown got Wright to block the back-hand draw. This caused Whittle to put Livereidge on a drive, to clean out two blocks, about four feet in front, but to everybody's surprise he just missed with both bowls. Brown took no chances over Whittle suffering tlie same fate, for he only sent his bowls half way up, making almost a perfect block for a straight drive, and both of Whittle's swinging shots went outside the head.

Next Saturday's challengers are J. A. Robertson, E. Rogers, E. Bilkey, B. Burrows (Waitemata), followed by O. E. Bridges (Ponsonby) and W. F. Hardley (West End).

The Denison Pins resulted in an easy win for the challengers, R. T. Sheppard, R. Buckle, G. N. Sainty, S. W. Thompson (Hillsboro , ), who went to -Dominion Road and put up a score of 29 to 15 against the holders, C. Norgrove, W. D. Kelly, B. Ramsey, R. Goldsmith. The visitors won the first head, and lost five on the second,- after which they never looked back. In a little while they were leading by 21 to 6, so they had nothing more to do but play on the defensive, and keep down the score. The next challengers are J. Faulder, T. Hayes, W. Gosling, J. Wright (Epsom), followed by G. R. Martinson (Devonport) and G. Cnchton (Te Papapa).

The Jordan Pins pave another instance of the reversal of form which is so common in bowls and yet so hard to understand. A really strong ; team from Otahuhu (G. W. Venables, W. Pinkey, S. E. Harper, J. Gardiner) went to Onehunga to try conclusions with the Te Papapa holders (G. Cnchton, H. Johnson, E. Marks, G. Angus), and started off by getting nine before their opponents started. They got only three more while Te Papapa ran up to 20, leaving them the task of getting the possible on the last head for a tie, which counte as a loss to the challengers. They played it, and it again went in favour of "the holders, until Gardiner burned the jack with his last bowl, just for satisfaction, so they let if go at that.

Te Papapa will again defend the trophies on the Onehunga green next Saturday, the challengers being J. Tyndall, R.\Hart,W. J. Cahill, P. jSTorris (St. Holier'e), followed by J. J. Toy (Ellerslie) and W. R. Knight (Mangere). Shopkeepers v. The Rest.

The Grey Lynn members are nothing if not original," and they divided the club last Saturday in the above fashion, creating considerable interest. It was the "Little Corporal," Napoleon, who branded the English as a "nation of shopkeepers," probably little dreaming that more than a century afterwards a bowling club would adopt the term, not as one of derision, but as one of pride. Napoleon's attempted insult has suffered the same fate as that of the other arch-criminal, the ex-Kaiser, whose reference to England's "contemptible little army" has been borrowed as a proud title that will live for ever.

Ponsonby will hold a pairs tournament on Wednesday, and on the next two Saturdays there will be a two-day rink tournament at Grey Lynn and also at Hillsboro'. Dominion Council in Christchurch. The Dominion president, Mr. James Pascoe, left for the South last night, accompanied by Mr. George Gladding, secretary of the Auckland centre, who was recently elected as one of the six unofficial North Island members of the council. They are going straight onto Dunedin, in response to an invitation given by the Dunedin members when they were here last July, before Mr. Pascoe had returned from England, when they stated that all their_ people were hoping to see. him before his term of office expired. He will be entertained by the bowlers of Dunedin at a social to-morrow evening, and will return to Christchurch in time for the annual meeting, which opens on Thursday morning under the chairmanship of the new president, Mr. H. B. Oakey.
