WHEEL AND TRACK NOTES.

RELATED TO LADY'S BOY. Lady Winifrode, the.half-sister tb.Lady's Boy : by Catmint, is beginning to settle down nicely,to her work at Ellerslie and is also putting on condition'. This filly is coming four years old, but has never raced; still, she is a sturdily built sort who may develop -into a. useful . performer next season. ;\ - .-• IN WORK AGAIN.; The rising three-year-olds Speedfast and Royal Gallant have been taken up -again •by W. Ryan, who will prepare them for racing during the coming season. Both these geldings displayed a fair amount of promise in their- races earlier -in .the 'season,, and with more time and experience should develop into payable propositions. TO RACE AT TRENTHAM. Reports from Mataihata state that Prince Val and his stable mate. Lord Val, are both getting through a.solid preparation at that centre.. They are due to leave for Tren.tham within the next few days, to fulfil engagements at the Wellington winter meeting, which opens, next.Saturday. Both these geldings were in good form at the Great Northern .meeting, and they should have excellent prospects of winning some money on the southern trip if they race up to their Ellerslie performances. BROTHER TO SECOND WIND. The rising ,two-year-old full-brother, to Second Wind has been christened Court Yard. Like his well-performed brother he was bred by Mr. T. H. Lowry,, at Okawa, and is one of the pupils of R. Alexander, at Greeiimeadows. He is a well-put-together juvenile, who may probably turn out a useful sort. In company with one of his stable mates. Aescuhis (Night Raid—Tinihanga) he was given a dash down the straight last week, during • the course . of. the Napier Park meeting, and moved particularly well, ' a remark which also applies to Aesculus.

TWO-YEAR-OLDS AT HASTINGS. Gold Trail, who made a good showing in the Two-year-old Parade at Hastings on Thursday, is a chestnut filly, by Chief Ruler from Pure Gold, by Psychology from Desert Gold. She is owned by Mr. W.-D. M. Douglas and cost 150gs at the last yearling sales at Trentham.. She is stated to be well grown and is .likely to be. sent to Australia shortly. Gold -Trail is • trainei by J. M. Cameron. Slippery, who was also .prominent, is a chestnut filly by Hunting Song from Tigritiya, arid is owned _by Mr. H. Tupaea. Her dam was very useful, winning, among other racee, the Railway Handicap- at Ellerslie. A LUCKY INVESTOR. A Paris message to London a short time ago stated that tne newly-established "tote in town," which permits a person to have a bet on the official betting machine without actually going" to the races, had paid £2000 to a backer who had a 10/ treble. The man put his 10/ on the- first race at Le Tremblay, and his horse paid out 33 to 1. Then he marked his ticket for all to go on a horse which won the third race, and again all to go an appropriately named horse called Gold Rush, which won the last race in a canter When he-drew .his-winnings at the betting office.; he was almost mobbed by the crowd which had collected. PERFORMED WELL LAST WINTER. At the Wellington winter - meeting twelve months ago Coon Song was responsible for several smart performances and finished up with two wins and one third placing to his credit in.the three races that he contested at the meeting: The Hunting Song gelding figures in the chief sprint events at the coming.meeting at Irentham, but he has not won a race for some months, and his chance of repeating last year's performances are not over bright. Coon Song is a proved galloper in heavy going, and as these conditions usually prevail at the Wellington winter meeting he . will be racing under favourable conditions, and that will be a factor in his favour. MR. T. H. LOWRY'S TEAM. Mr,. T: H. Lowry has christened the three-year-old gelding by Nigger Minstrel —Silver Grey, who will; race as Nigg?rliead. He is the first fpal of his dam, who is an Australian-bred mare by . Grey. Monk— Chlorite, who traces .back to unbeaten Grand Flaneur. Niggerhead .is a .big, solid gelding, who was tast m his early stages, and consequently-was not asked to race.- He should assuredly find, no difficulty in carrying.'weight and next season may. show up in classic, events, His trained R. Alexander, has , late y recommissioned: Chrysology, and a further addition to the establishment at Greenmeadows will shortly be made by the reappearance of Monarchy, the rising three-year-o d eon of Chief Ruler and-Bonnie Briar, who, as a yearling, was purchased by .; Mr. Lowry for 300gs. . ; .* . N.Z. TRAINER IN AUSTRALIA.

Several skilful cross-country riders and capable trainers have-come over ,from iSew Zealand and made their homes m Australia (says the Melbourne Sporting Globe"). Among them is S. who now has the Grand National Hurdle favourite Kendler_in his stable. Soon after his, arrival in this country Reid became established as a front rank rider over hurdles and fences. His name always will be associated with that of Mountain God, who carried him to victory in two National Steeplechases. On joining the ranks of the tratiners, !• Reid was almost' immediately successful. In the. new role his knowledge of jumpers was turned to good account. To begin with he did well wit)i Chrysostom,; a dashing fencer, who won for him the big June steeplechase at Randwick and other race 6. Last year Reid turned Tirade out in perfect .condition for the Grand National Hurdles, but the, black gelding was not good-.enough. Perhaps Kendler k destined to do better.

UNOCO FOR TRENTHAM. Unoco is to contest minor hurdle events at the Wellington meeting. The Te Rapa trainer* A. Jackson, will take him south early next week. R. E. Thomson has been engaged to ride Unoco in hie southern engagements. ENGAGED AT MATAWATU. Excellent nominations have been received for the winter meeting. of the Manawatu Racing Club. Among the Auckland and Waikato horses engaged are: Unoco, Day Lass, Monetize, St. Warrigal, Dark Prince, Spalpiko, Claremore, Manawhenua, Wild Country and Taneriri. YIELDED TO TREATMENT. Kaiti, who was given a light blister some time back, gives evidence that the cause of his trouble has yielded to treatment. His sister, Kaihoro,.is being hacked about, as is the half-brother by Arausio to the brace, Souchong. The trio should he well forward when the spring arrives for them to be recommissioned. ON THE IMPROVE. Sir JVal, the rising three-year-old gelding by Valkyrian from Te" Alcitai in W. J. Hawkins' stable, is beginning to show more promise in his work and is steadily furnishing up into racing condition. He lias not been overworked during the past few months, but will now be sent along a bit faster, in view of racing at the early spring meetings. AN OVERDUE WIN. The Te Awamutu owiler Mr. A. Rowan was credited with an overdue win when Day Lass scored in the Whakatn Hurdles at the .Hawke's Bay meeting on Thursday. The Day Comet mare's previous success was recorded in the Ladies' Bracelet at the Waikato Hunt meeting in October fast, and in the interval she has only once been in the money. ENTERED FOR SECOND DAY. 1 Though not engaged at the Tauinarunui meeting to-day, Royal Survey figures ill the entries for the Oh lira Handicap, one 'mile, to be run 011 Monday. Since racing at the Great Northern meeting Royal Survey lias been under his owner's care in the country and nothing is .known regarding his .condition.. Still, he is a useful performer, and 'it started should put up a creditable showing.
