RACING AT TRENTHAM.
THE WINTER MEETING. STEEPUSS AND HURDLES. RECENT FORM REVIEWED. The Wellington winter meeting, which will be held at Trenthara next month, is the next most important fixture in the racing calendar, and. as usual, the fields should be large and thoroughly representative. The weights for the first day and also the Winter Hurdle Race, to be run on the third day, have been declared by Mr. H. Coyle, and most interest just now will centre in the latter event and also the Wellington Steeplechase. The Wellington Steeplechase. Red Fuchsia (10.10) is top-weight in the Wellington Steeplechase, and he is not overburdened. He showed at Napier, when he carried 11.8 into second place in the big steeples, that he was not far from his best, and he should run well at Trentham. (Jlaremore (10.5) has only once raced in a steeplechase, and that was when he ran second in the Winter Steeplechase at Ellerslie, in which he had 9.12 and was only beaten by a length by Spalpiko, to whom he was conceding 121b. Now lie is meeting Spalpiko on 21b better terms, and should be greatly improved. Lucess (10.2) finished third in the Great Northern Steeplechase with 9.12, ai'ter running second to Prince Lu in the Great Northern Hurdle Race, but with 10.2 he was well beaten in the Winter Steeplechase. However, the two hard races he had had on the previous two days of the meeting had evidently affected him, and he should be a better horse at Trentham. Omeo (10.0) did not start at Ellerslie, though he ran well at Egmont and Wanganui. According to reports from Awapuni he is still sore. At his best he would take a lot of beating. Tuki (9.12) was a good steeplechaser a season or two ago, but he has not raced for some time. Fabrmno (9.1f1) ran second to King's Guard in this event in 1929, but he has had little racing for some time. Spalpiko (9.9) won the Winter Steeplechase at Ellerslie with 91b less, after being successful at Te Awamutu. He has plenty of pace and jumps well. He led for about three miles in the Great Northern Steeplechase, but then petered out. If he can stay the distance he should be handy at the finish. St. Warrigal (9.9) is a very likely customer, for he is a fine jumper and should stay on. He won both at Te Awamutu and Te Rapa and will be much improved as the result. Wako King finished second in the Great Northern Steeplechase with 9.4 and was fourth in the Winter Steeplechase with 9.10. He has now been awarded 9.8, and if produced in the same fettle will have to be reckoned with. Copey (9.0) is in at a similar impost to that which he carried in the Great Northern Steeplechase and the Winter Steeplechase at Ellerslie, finishing fourth in each of them. He subsequently ran second in the Waikato and Hamilton Steeplechases with much more weight, and he looks one of the best on the minimum. Of the others Paris, Fine Acre, Nukumai and Radiac look the best. A few that may appeal just now ai-e: Claremore, St. Warrigal, Lucess. Wako King, Spalpiko and Copey. The Winter Hurdles. Carinthia (11.4) won the Winter Hurdles last year with 9.9, the Grand National Hurdle Race with 10.8, and the Sydenham Hurdles, two ■ miles, at Riccarton, with 11.9. He carried the latter impost in each of his races at the Great Northern meeting, finishing third in the Great Northern Hurdle Race, while he was unplaced in the Remuera Hurdle Race. He has now 51b off his back and is meeting Prince Lu on 241b better terms than in the Great Northern and 51b better than in the Remuera Hurdle Race, while he will meet Lucess on 111b better terms than he did in the Great Northern. Carinthia will have to be considered. Make Up (10.13) has the same impost as he carried in the Great Northern Hurdle Race, in which he fell. In the Remuera Hurdle Race with 11.0 he finished second, beating, among others, Carinthia easily. Now there is only 51b between the pair, while in the Great Northern there was 101b and in the Remuera Hurdles 91b. It looks as though Carinthia should beat Make Up. Prince Lu (10.11) won the Great Northern Hurdle . Race, two miles and a half, with 9.6, but was unplaced in the Remuera Hurdle Race with 10.11. However, with 10.10, on the last day he accounted for the Campbell Hurdle Race, two miles, and looked as though he could have gone a quarter of a mile further under that impost. He should be again hard to beat in the Winter Hurdles. Red Fuchsia (10.8) has won over hurdles recently and has also shown form over steeples. If back to his best he would have-a good show with this weight. Conjurer 11. (10.5) has performed well over hurdles in Australia and recently won the Century Hurdle race, one mile and three-quarters, at Wanganui, which was his last start. If he is produced he should prove one of the hardest to beat. Amorist (10.3) failed to stay in this event last season, but Nukumai (10.1) cannot be ruled out altogether, for he ran a great race in the Century Hurdles, being beaten by only half a length by Conjurer 11., while he was fourth in the Great Northern ■Hurdles with 81b more than he is called upon to carry in the event under review. High Pitch (9.12) was going well in the, Great Northern Hurdle Race when he fell five furlongs from home. On the second day, with 9.0, he won the Remuera Hurdle Race, and was going so well at the end that he should stay out the extra distance at Trentham. He will be one of the prime fancies. Claremore (9.11) proved himself a good hurdler earlier in the season, and he will also be in request. Mountain Heath (9.11) does not appear to be right for such a long distance event, but Nucleus (9.9) showed good form at the Great Northern meeting, being third in the Remuera Hurdles, two miles, with 9.13, and second in the Campbell Hurdles, of similar distance, with lib more. Lucess (9.8) finished second to Prince Lu in the Great Northern Hurdle Race in receipt of 41b. Now he receives 171b, which should enable him to hold his own with Prince Lu. Of the others, Fine Acre (9.8), who finished second last year, Singleton, Troilus and Apache look the best. Some that might find favour at the present juncture are: Conjurer 11., Lueess, High Pitch, Prince Lu, Claremore, Carinthia, Nucleus.
