A WALKING SHIP.
The strangest craft ever built on the Tyne is at Havre, France. She is the first vessel of the kind to be built in England, and all machinery has been shipped from America. She has not any propelling machinery, but; her remarkable plant enables her to raise herself several feet in the water by means of four large legs, each 70ft long, which can be operated rapidly, and which jab into the river or sea bed. The dipper can tear into solid rock and scoop up ten tons of material at a time. The five steam engines aboard and the whole of the plant can be operated from the bridge.
