TRADE WITH CANADA.
STATEMENT BY MR. FORBES. REPLY TO TRADERS' ASSOCIATION. The following reply has been received by the Canadian-British Traders' Association of New Zealand from the Prime Minister, the Right Hon. G. W. Forbes, relative to its representations concerning trade between New Zealand and Canada: "The newspaper report as quoted by you does not fairly represent what was stated by me to a deputation on June 23. After referring to the six months' notice given on April 12 last of the cancellation of the original arrangement between Canada and New Zealand, and to the proposed duty on New Zealand butter of four cents per pound, I stated that the Canadian Government, without notice, had doubled the duty on butter. The increased duty could not, of course, become effective until October 12 la3t, but no'prior notice was given to me or to the New Zealand Government that the Canadian Government intended to ask Parliament on September 10 ti double the duty on New Zealand butter."
