NEARLY 6000.
WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED RESUMPTION OF SCHEME. LOCAL BODY QUOTAS. NEXT WEEK'S ENGAGEMENTS. Nearly 6000 .unemployed men in Auckland city and suburbs will be given work under No. 5 scheme next week, as a result of the Government's decision to continue the scheme until Parliament has had an opportunity of formulating a future policy. In some cases the work will mean reengagement of the men who still had a portion of the rationed employment to work out, and in others it will involve the absorption, of men whose turn had come to stand down for the "one week in every four." . Another outcome of the continuance of the scheme ie the decision of the Auckland Hospital Board to issue relief orders for one week only, instead of for a fortnight as previously. It is estimated that the threatened cessation of No. 5 scheme cost the board about £1000 in relief measures, which, the authorities believe, would not have been necessary had men who were "standing down" known that employment awaited them after to-morrow. . Inquiries this morning indicated that a total of SSOO jnen -will be employed under the scheme next week. The distribution' is as follows: —- Waitemata County Council 1400 Mount lloskill Road Board ...... SOO City Council -. .■ ..... 000 Transport Board 430 Mount Eden Borough Council 400 Mount Albert Borough Council .... 400 Onehunga Borough Council 400 New Lynn Borough Council 300 Otahuhu Borough Council -.. 260 Devonport Borough Council 240 One Tree Hill Borough ■ Council ... 200 Takapuna Borough Council ....... 200 Northcote Borough Council 90 Newmarket Borough Council .
