when they saw that the fire was beginning to die. Wildly they leapt into the tree, and once more the elf joined them. "See, there!" he excitedly cried, pointing. "I am sure I saw two fairies flit into that next tree:" In great haste all the Imps dashed off in the direction Nimble-toes pointed, none of them noticing that he failed to follow them, but returned instead to his seat and poured more water on the fire. When, after a vain search for the imaginary fairies, the imps trooped back, their castle was fast vanishing into the air. And the fire? It was out—a blackened, smouldering ruin. With despairing cries they dashed into the fading door of thei" castle. "Save it!" cried the King, faintly. "Save it!" But the imps could do nothing. The elf poured yet more water, and the whole castle disappeared, vanishing in drifting whiffs of smoke, into the truss. Tiie imjis vanished with it, and where they went to no one knows nor cares. Shouting with joy, Nimble-toes skipped from his perch," and on the ground, in a heap, he found his wings and his clothes. Quickly, he donned them and washed the smoke from his face. Then away he went, dancing through the forest, spreading the joyous news that the mysterious smoke castle had gone and the bad little imps were vanquished for ever.
