FASHIONS IN DRESS MATERIALS.
THE WOOL MARKET.
(To the Editor.) It does not seem an extravagant idea to suggest that there are in Auckland a sufficient number of influential ladies to introduce the fashion of using more wool instead of silk. •The ladies of Melbourne have already done this by reviving the cult of knitting that was ,ho fashionable a few years ago, to the great benefit of local woollen mills, as against artificial silk mills overseas. Nobody would argue that the introduction of this fashion in Auckland during the present winter, even if it were to spread through the whole of the Dominion, would materially raiise the price of the coming wool clip, but it would certainly give a great impetus to the local milling activity. The influence would be still greater if the ladies extended their patronage to manufactured woollen dress materials, instead of merely limiting it to knitting wool, for the New Zealand mills are now capable of turning out beautiful cloth of excellent quality. There could not be a more appropriate time to do this than during the present month, when the advent of winter makes woollen clothing most suitable, when wool is so cheap that it does not return cost price to the grower, when unemployment is so depressing that even the smallest" alleviation would have a good effect o. the community, when all the ladies would feel that they were personally doing something to help, and when every possible compensation is valuable to labour, in order to offset the "cut" of ten per cent.
