WHANGAREI HARBOUR BOARD.

PORTLAND -WHARF EXTENSION

CONFERENCE IN AUCKLAND.

WHANGAREI, Friday.

At the annual meeting of the Whangarei Harbour Board to-day Mr. J. A. Finlayson was re-elected chairman and Mr. J. E. Holmes was re-elected deputychairman. Concerning an application from the Wilsons Portland Cement Company for permission to extend and renew certain portions of the company's wharf at Portland, the chairman reported that on a recent visit to Wellington he had conferred with representatives of the Railway, Marine and Public Works Departments. As a result negotiations were entered into with the company with a view to holding a conference between representatives of the Departments, the company and the board. The object was to endeavour to arrive at a working basis whereby the company would utilise the board's proposed wharves at the new port at Kioreroa and rail its inward and outward cargo from Kioreroa to and from Portland. The chairman added that the company had signified its willingness to send a representative to the conference, which would be held in Auckland shortly.
