OPERATING COSTS REDUCED.

The working accounts for the Railways Department for the financial year , ended March 31 were published in the "Gazette" this evening. They show a net revenue of £088,727, as against the estimate of £1,380,000 in last year's Budget. i A comparison of the accounts for the last two years, showing the results of railway operation in the two islands and aggregate transactions in respect of other services is as follows:— NORTH ISLAND. 1929-30. 1930-31. Miscellaneous revenue, which is not particularised, amounted last year to £370)853, a decrease of £9234. Expenses of the Lake Wakatipu steamer service exceeded revenue by £4900, as against £0927 in the previous year. Gross revenue from refreshment rooms, advertising, road motors and other services was £293,874, a decrease of £19,006, while the expenditure was £284,192, or £20,450 less than in the previous year. Rents from Departmental dwellings amounted to £116,250, an increase of £0608, while the expenditure was £178,410, a reduction of £9406. The expenditure comprises maintenance, depreciation, interest and insurance.
