FROM A LETTER.

(By Dudley Cole, "Tanna Wata," Kaitieke.) Since the earthquake of February 3 of this year, the Retaruke River has only been clear once, being a greeny yellow colour most of the time. On investigation it was found that a large slip had come down, due to a hill collapsing, and a large mud spring had made its appearance where the hill once stood. We have not been able to swim in the river since this occurred, and have to go over a mile away to the Kaitieke whenever we feel like a swim. We have had very wintry weather up here lately and at present are having cold southerly winds.
