CULT OF BEAUTY.

HOW TO FIGHT FEAR. EXERCISES AT HOME. (By A BEAUTY SPECIALIST.) There is as much truth as poetry in the little verse: "A merry heart all the way goes, A sad one tires in a mile!" It is a physiological fact that the blood pumped by the merry heart is redder, purer and far more able to carry on than that pumped by the heavy heart. Fear is the most devastating thing in life, just as happiness, is the most vitalising. One deep, dark, indigo fit of the blues, can bring back in one day all the wrinkles chased away by beauty treatment. Worry is fear over what may happen, but which not necessarily will happen, nor can be prevented by the worrying. Therefore, fear and worry, anger, sadness, must all be classed in a destructive category. What happens under stress of great fear? First, the heart-beat and the respiration are both retarded, the blood flows less quickly through the veins, and is not thoroughly oxygenated in the lungs. The system becomes clogged with carbon-dioxide; under stress of great fear there is 20 times as much carbondioxide in the system than normally. Second, the blood supply is cut off from the stomach, and that organ, normally a bright red ball, becomes a dark-brown shrunken mass. The digestive juices, the saliva, the pancreatic juice and the gall undergo a chemical change, and what is eaten is not digested. Thus worry brings on a slow and steady dissemination of* carbon-dioxide, and the result is auto-intoxication, often called a nervous breakdown. The effect of happiness is quite the reverse. The heart-beat and respiration are both accelerated, and the sys-

tern is cleanscd by a flow of pure red blood, the blood supplied to the stomach is increased; the happy person can digest nails. The muscles have a new elasticity, the happy girl is light on her toes, she wants to dance and sing. A perfectly functioning body gives colour to her cheeks, brightness to the eye. The phrase, "beautiful by happiness," is no idle figure of speech. Hints for the Spring Complexion. Spring has its problems. Complexions are very difficult to manage at this time of the year, so be prepared. Blotches, pimples, blackheads, all flourish unless stern measures are taken. Sulphur, inside and out, is the great antidote. Sulphur is not so difficult to take, and every chemist stocks sulphur soap and sulphur cream. A teaspoonful of sulphur in a little water before breakfast is an excellent skin purifier. But if you need a more potent internal purifier than sulphur, get your chemist to mix you a decoction of sarsaparilla. Need I 6av menus must be revived? And constipation avoided at all costs, not only for your complexion's sake, but your figure's sake, too. Hot lemonade might, with advantage, be taken the last thing at night. Give up such things as pastries, puddings, candies and chocolates —especially chocolate cream. If you have a rival and want to ruin her complexion present her with a large box of chocolate creams, and wait and see the result. A Beauty Hint, t For a soft, white skin, try this beauty secret which your grandmother most certainly used when she was a girl. Boil three tablespoonfuls of oatmeal in water two or three minutes. Strain and cool. To this paste add one tablespoonful of lemon juice or more if it does not irritate the skin. Pat a little of this on the face and neck at night and you will notice results almost immediately. This sours very quickly and must be made fresh every other day. This treatment is excellent for an oily skin, with blackheads. Rub a good cleansing cream into your skin. Wet a cake of pure soap with hot water and rub on top of the cream. Now rub the soap and cream together into your skin. Rinse with warm, then cold, water and you will find your face smooth, clean and' fresh. For those women *. jo insist upon using soap every day—and it certainly may not be harmful where the oily skin is concerned —a good cream

[ rubbed into the skin &nd mingled with soap is far less drying than an ordinary soap and water wash. Double Chins. Dieting isn't enough if you want a fresh complexion. You must back up diet with exercise. Walking, tennis, dancing and swimming, will keep your ligure trim and supple. But where such recreations are out of the question, bedroom jerks must be substituted. Have a swing put up in your garden. Swinging is an exercise I would commend to those of you who are worried about your arms. If scraggy it rounds out, if over-fat it reduces. Swings, too, offer admirable opportunities for dispersing second chins. Lift your head up and straighten your shoulders as you swing back, and take in long deep breaths. Deep breathing, I would remind you, is the great antidote to saltcellars and hollow chest. China that show a tendency to reproduce themselves, by the way, can be disciplined at home. Saline douches applied with vigorous slapping, or with a patter, help to hasten their departure. Never forget that the neck, however scraggy, or however unsightly, can be improved, if neck exercises are regularly done.
