RELIEF WORK WAGES.
Please allow me to contradict "Reform's" letter of April 6. He states that the Coates Government paid 9/ and 12/6 per day full time. Perhaps the largest job started was the Rotoroa Road deviation. The workers were paid on a 9/ and 12/ basis, the prices being arranged by officials in Auckland, and Hamilton offices. The price actually paid worked out as low as 6/ per day, with time off stopped. The married men had half their earnings sent direct to their wives. The balance was paid to the cookhouse. Very few of the married men could pay their full 25/ per week to the cookhouse. When "Reform" has a wider experience of politics he will know that it takes a Liberal Government years to straighten up the muddle of a Tory Government of long standing, even in normal times. Could we give Mr. Forbes the same opportunities as the previous Government he would reduce the national debt. LIBERAL.
