REQUEST REFUSED.
HALF-HOLIDAY IN SCHOOLS. "CHEER UP WEEK" SCHEME. An application from the "Cheer Up Week" Committee, asking that the AucKland Education Board grant a special half-dav holiday to schools on one (lay during ""Cheer Up Week," was fefused by the board this morning. "Has the gloom and depression affected the children?" asked Mr. H. S. W. King, adding: "They have a full day's holiday on Saturday, v I think that is enough. We would be creating a dangerous precedent if we granted the request. ' A suggestion was made that the matter should be left to the school committees who had power to grant a haltholiday. Mr. King protested against the proposal, however, on the-grounds that such a reply would create the impression that■the board was in favour of the granting of a holiday. Mr. E. CV Purdie pointed out that some committees might 1 grant the request ■while others would not do so, a position he said, which should be avoided. It was decided to reply to the association that the board could not see its way clear to grant the request.
