NORTH SHORE DESTRUCTOR.
RAISING CHIMNEY STACK. CONSIDERATION DEFERRED. The management committee of the North Shore destructor was last night informed by the Devonport and Northcote Borough Councils that consideration of the report of Mr. James Lowe, advising the lengthening of the chimney stack, had been deferred until it was ascertained what the estimated cost would be in view of the earthquake precautions that might be enforced by the Government commission. ',
The sanitary inspector stated that investigation of the complaints that day had shown that the smoke was a little more than objectionable. The wind was south-westerly and from an unusual quarter, and gusty, blowing the smoke downwards. It was decided to reply that the committer was considering the advisability of refraining from burning refuse in future should similar exceptional Weather conditions bo experienced. Iron bands are to be constructed around the base of the chimney at a cost of £10, the engineer having reported that the brickwork was fractured. Mr. A. C. Faulkner attended, and explained the action of a steam spray in the direction of diminishing smoke, this contrivance being used in locomotives. He was heartily thanked for hia advice.
