TAWA FLAT TUNNBLUBRS. LOWER WAGES OPPOSED.' (By Telegraph,—Press Association,)' WELLINGTON, Monday. , Tunnellers employed on the Tawa Flat railway deviation refused to start work this morning as a protest against a reduction in wages. Reference was made to the incident in the House of Representatives to-day. Interviewed to-night the Minister of Public Works, Hon. W. B. Taverner, said he had received a deputation from the men, introduced by Mr. H. E. Holland, Leader of the Labour party. The position of the men was discussed, and the Minister promised to look into the points raised. The average wage earned by tunnellers was about 32/ a day. Instructions had been given by Cabinet to have the scale readjusted. The work was being done on the co-operative system.
