V The general fall in prices of primary products has made it necessary to reconsider the policy of high protection f&. New Zealand wheat and flour. Th« " Government promised not to interfers with existing conditions for the harvest which Has just been completed, but there is a strong body of opinion in Parliament favouring a considerable reduction of protection to secure the cheapening of bread in line with other commodities The future of the wheat industry a suggested sliding scale of duties and the price of bread, were fully discussed with the Prime Minister this morning by Dominion representatives of whea* growers, millers and bakers, in associa tion with South Island members of Parliament. Certain proposals were submitted *to the Prime Minister, and it was arranged to further discuss the position. 3 After the second conference Mr Forbes will make a pronouncement indicative of the Government's policy.
