SESSION'S WORK.
i FORECAST OF LEGISLATION. ANOTHER RETRENCHMENT MEASURE. RAILWAY DIRECTORS' PAY. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. Lengthy meetings of Cabinet were held on Saturday for the final consideration of the remaining legislation of the session. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, subsequently remarked that there was more responsibility than pleasure in Cabinet work nowadays, as most decisions had to be unpleasant ones, curtailing expenditure at every point owing to falling revenue. It may be inferred from this remark that the forecast of another measure of retrenchment is corroborated and that Public Works operations are likely to be further restricted. An important measure will be introduced early in the week providing for a change in the control of railways. It is expected that the bill will he a short one, creating a board of directors, three in number. The Government has slightly deviated from the recommendations of the Railway Commission, which anticipated that business men could, be induced to act on the directorate without remuneration. It is expected that the legislation will provide for a chairman of directors, who will be a full-time officer on salary and that some payment will also be made to the two remaining directors.
