ATHLETICS.
CALLIOPE CLUB RUN. The harrier season was opened by the Calliope Club on Saturday with a run of about five miles across country. Several new members had their first run, making a pack of 11 runners. 'fc Next Saturday the official opening run will be held, starting from the Methodist Hall, Birkenhead, at 2.30 p.m. New mombers are urged to take part in this run.
TE KOPURU SPORTS.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) DARGAVILLE, Saturday. The Te Kopuru sports were run off this afternoon in squally weather. There was a fair attendance. A feature of the fixture was the number of competitors in the athletic and chopping events. E. V. Wilson annexed the maiden, 70 yards dash and yards cup handicap. Results : — Maiden Handicap Chop, 12in block.—R. Montgomery, 10s, 1; J. Searle, 10s, 2; A. Dickson, Bs, 3. Fourteen competitors.- Won by a good margin. Time, 1.56 2-5. Standing Chop Handicap, 12in block.— R. Switzer, 12s, 1; T? West, scr, 2; R. Montgomery, 355, 3. Thirteen competitors. Won by a comfortable margin with a wide margin between second and third. Time, 1.7 3-5. Underhand Chop Hanjjhaa 14i " block.— M. Morresey, 18s, 1; T. West, scr, 2; E. Leach, 18s, 3. Twelve competed. Morresey chopped splendidly and won comfortably. Time, 49 2-ss. Maiden Handicap Double-handed Saw, two cuts, 14in block.—T. Lethbridge and W. Tahu, scr, 1; J. Ross and E. Leach, ss, 2. Open Handicap Double-handed Saw, two cuts, 14in block.—R. Switzer and J. Elliott, 3s, 1; T. Lethbridge and A. Dickson, 2s, 2; G. New and R. Dickson, 9s, 3. Seven pairs competed. Won narrowly. Time, 21 2-ss. Championship Double-handed Saw. two cuts, 14in block.—T. West and O. Blowcs 1, E. Leach and L. Blowes 2, T. Lethbridge and Dickson 3. Four pairs started. Wonnarrowly. The four pairs finished within a few seconds. 100 Yards Maiden.—E. Wilson 1, T. Marinkovich 2, B. Morrisey 3. Six . competitors. Won by three yards. Time, 12 2-ss. 75 Yards Dash Handicap.—E. V. Wilson, 9yds, 1; G. O. Fitz-Henry, Byds, 2; U. Thomas, Iyd, 3. Won by two yards, inches between second and third. Time, 8.1-ss. 120 Yards Cup Handicap.—E. V. Wilson, 13yds, 1; V. Thomas, lyd, 2: Warmington, 4yds, and Hobson, 6yds, dead heat, 3. Won by four yards, with the second man comfortably in front of the third men. Time, 12 2-ss. 440 Yards Handicap.—G. O. Fitz-Henry, 30yds, 1; W. Hobson, 10yds, 2; T. Marin30yds, 3. Seven starters. Won by four yards, two yards separating second and third. No time taken. 880 Yards Handicap.—J. M. Kelly, 35yds, 1; J. B. Hargreave, 25yds, 2. Six competed. Hargrave came in with a fine finish but failed by four yards to catch Kelly. The remaining competitors failed to finish. Time, 2.27 3-5. Pole Height Judging (correct height 35ft 4in).—F.
